Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock after he took offense at a joke made by the comedian Sunday.
Rock aimed at the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, for her shaved hair. Pinkett is suffering from alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that leads to baldness or patchy hair loss.
While Will Smith apologized to Rock after the incident, it does raise a serious question: are cine actors and technicians serious about maintaining the dignity of the prestigious event?
Held every year, the prestigious Academy Awards, AKA the Oscars, recognizes the best in the entertainment business. The Oscar statuette/logo represents excellence, class, and greatness. Not only does Will Smith’s slap belittles a comedian’s creative freedom, but it also devalues the importance of the most significant film awards in the world.
Through the years, the Oscars have grown in stature and importance. From its humble beginning as the “Academy Award of Merit” to “the Oscars” as we know it today, the statuette/logo has traveled a long way.
Designed by Cedric Gibbons, MGM Art Director, the first Academy Awards statuette/logo featured a knight standing on a reel with a sword. The logo also has a hidden “A,” making it one of the strongest visual identities in the world.

The Oscar logo has not changed a great deal over the years because it has all the right elements that make an emblem timeless. The clean and simple logo is recognized by one and all and represents supremacy, merit, success, knowledge, elegance, and seriousness.
The unfortunate incident that took place at the Oscars 2022 goes against everything that the Oscar logo represents.
The actor won his first Oscar the same night for King Richard, where he successfully portrayed the character of tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams’ father.
The actor apologized to Rock, saying his behavior at the Oscars was “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line, and I was wrong,” the Oscar winner mentioned in a statement.
The actor used his Instagram handle to share his apology note where he expressed that “Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive.”

Here’s the video that has taken the world by surprise.
