Originally launched in 2010 as Windows Azure, it is also well known for networking and supporting many different programming languages.

Revealed on May 7 by Microsoft, the new Fluent-design-inspired icon for Azure is crafted carefully to look familiar to the older insignia since that is “what customers know and love.”

Microsoft described the new Azure icon the following way:

“The new Azure icon represents the unity of Azure within the larger Microsoft family of product icons. It’s part of Microsoft’s Fluent Design System, carefully crafted to produce icons that look familiar to what customers know and love, while representing the agile future of our business.”

The new logo will also become a part of the Microsoft Fluent Design System. Introduced in 2017, the Fluent Design System allows developers to work across its various platforms.

According to Microsoft, “Fluent is an open source, cross-platform design system that gives designers and developers the frameworks they need to create engaging product experiences – accessibility, internationalization, and performance included.”

The centerpiece of the new design is the “A” which is not too different from the previous version of the logo. The instantly recognizable insignia carries the same attributes of the visual identity as all the other products of Microsoft.

The logo is minimal, neat and extremely memorable. The blue in the logo portrays professionalism and authenticity at the same time.

Microsoft’s attempt to achieve consistency across its entire product line up is clearly visible as Azure gets a fresh new look. Be it Word or Excel or the rest of Microsoft 365, Azure’s new look compliments all the product icons of the big tech company.

“As your ally in the cloud, our Azure mission is to deliver thoughtfully designed products and services that equip you to solve challenges and invent what’s next,” wrote Erin Zefkeles, senior product manager, Microsoft Azure.

“Our ability to meet your business and innovation needs is in part due to our growth mindset – which extends from front-end user experiences to small details like graphics and icons.”

According to Microsoft, Azure’s “A” icon will be seen across various platforms in the coming weeks. The new insignia will also be showcased at Build 2021, a digital event by Microsoft from May 25.

Microsoft’s attempt to achieve consistency across its entire product line up is clearly visible as Azure gets a fresh new look.
