Yelp launched its refreshed new logo along with a host of application icons Monday. The crowd-sourced reviews platform has started rolling out the new icons on iOS. Android users may expect to see the updated look later in the week.
The logo and the suite of application icons will appear in their original avatars; but, only more vibrant and visually balanced. Yelp users may expect to see an animation-based logo when they start the app.
To bring consistency, Yelp for Business, Reservations and Waitlist were also updated with new icons.
The purpose behind creating the new logo was “to bring a more contemporary look that maintains the fun, outgoing brand personality and mirrors the major advances” that the company has achieved over the years, mentioned Yelp in a blogpost. The new logo and the app icons, according to Yelp, will add a touch of modernity to the platform.
The Yelp design team mentioned, “Yelp’s original logo was inspired by the star symbol that appears in the character’s head in a moment of discovery in cartoons. This star was representative of the moment Yelp users made a new, local discovery and the symbol has since evolved into Yelp’s iconic burst shape logo.”
According to the design team, Yelp’s new logo celebrates the online platform’s legacy “with smoother, more geometric and proportionate visuals.”
“The Yelp wordmark has been completely redrawn from scratch—inspired by our original logo. The wordmark has retained the rounded quality of the original typeface but with more open counters and wider curves,” theYelp design team further mentioned.
Kelly Kinch, Vice President of Product Design, wrote, “Our latest updates are part of the continued roll out of our new modernized platform. Yelp started as a discovery and review site and has grown into a one-stop local platform where people can easily discover, connect and transact with great businesses in the community.”
“Our new look updates the Yelp product experience to feel simple, modern and cohesive. Whether you’re requesting quotes for a home project, booking an appointment, joining a restaurant’s waitlist, or ordering takeout, you’ll discover that our redesigned consumer experience streamlines all of these connections.”
